Sundays at Near River

A day out in the pristine Hastings hinterland

Farm activities

For the remainder of 2019 we are concentrating on infrastructure projects at the farm and have suspended our ‘Sundays’ events for the time been.

We are all about connecting people with how their food is grown. One of the best ways to do this is by spending some time on a farm, hence ‘Sundays at Near River’, which allows you to spend a morning partaking in the farms regular activities. You’ll help us feed and water the sows and their piglets, check on the chickens and collect some eggs, and then spend time in the market garden sowing seeds or mulching some beds.

After all this activity we will then harvest fresh produce for lunch and sit down to enjoy a meal garnered from our fields. The menu is likely to include soup, salad and pork or chicken with a beverage.

This is a wonderful opportunity for children both young and old to connect with the land and discover where their food comes from and experience the delight of tasting truly fresh food.

Foodies can expect a chat about our ethicial pastured raised practices and the multiude of benefits that we believe this has for the animals, the environment, and society in general.

Nature lovers will have the opportunity to wander down to the river that forms the northern boundary of our property, and maybe skim some stones across the surface.

‘Sundays at Near River’ is an ideal day out experiencing the pristine Hastings hinterland. Our farm shop, The Farmacy, will be opened with pasture raised pork, chicken and eggs, and seasonal field grown vegetables for sale.

Bookings are essential, as we have limited places available. Tickets prices are $55 for adults, $25 for children between 12 and 5 years (children under 5 years old are free), with a family ticket (2 adults, 2 children) at $135. All prices include GST.

What you need to know

The days proceedings begin at 10 am and finish up around 1.30 pm.

You can get your hands as dirty or keep them as clean as you like, meaning that you can be involved with each activity or simply observe.

Children are more than welcome, and will need to remain under their parents’ supervision. Opportunity for pet handling, namely with the chickens, exist, and through the warmer month some chicks are also on hand.

Near River is a working farm and you will be walking around the property, so appropriate foot ware is required. Runners or walking boots are ideal, open toe shoes are not permitted. Hats, sunscreen and insect repellent are also recommended.

Your pets

You need to leave your pets at home, as they can cause havoc with our free ranging animals.

Near River is a meat raising enterprise and our menu reflects this. Vegetarians are catered for by request, which must be advised at time of booking.

We need to feed our animals and harvest our crops regardless of the weather so ‘Sundays’ will run even in inclement weather. You are welcome to move your booking to another day pending availability.

Near River is a 45 minute drive along sealed roads from Port Macquarie. Detailed directions are provided with your booking confirmation.
